A clipper and a girl on fire on the path least traveled….

Diary of the journey on the path least traveled..just letting the heart do the talking while the fingers do the walking… 🙂

“ The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses.. No one to lean on, rely on or blame.. The gift is yours, it is an amazing journey, and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.” Bob Moawad

“Your time is limited, don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma, which is living the result of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinion drown your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition, they somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary” Steve Jobs

Hello Diary,

It’s a Saturday and Ole Man Winter is here in full force… 🙂 had some snowfall in the overnight…

sar morrning3

Woke up to a winter wonderland this morning… 🙂 managed to get back online late yesterday, apparently a major cable got damaged… been spending the morning bringing technology up to date and reprogramming the modem… now preparing for the upcoming winter weather event for the next week…

There is a cold air mass moving south out of Alberta, Canada… sometimes it is affectionately referred to as a “Alberta Clipper”.. 🙂

It is forecasted to arrive here around Tuesday and remain the rest of the week and for this part of the universe could see wind chills of near 40 below zero degrees F…. Diary, if you are anywhere near or in the blue to purple shaded area, that is the core of the air mass and it will feel like being in the North Pole rather than what one would normally experience… 🙂

And while on the subject of winter, as the world knows I am a COOP. observer for the National Weather Service (since 2001)… sooooooooooo, while everyone is all comfy in their beds dreaming about winning the lottery, I am outdoors making observations irregardless of the weather… I have a rain/snow gauge….

rain guage outdoors

Around 5:30 AM I will check the gauge, summer or winter… in this case it has snow inside…

snow in rain guage

So I bring it indoors… I put some warm water from the faucet in the plastic tube that comes with the gauge (in the summer it stays in the gauge for measuring rain)…

tap water in tube
Measure and make a note of the amount and put the water in the gauge with the snow and, Viola! the snow has melted…

I then put the liquid back in the tube…

Measure and then I subtract the first measurement from the last measurement and that gives me the rain equivalent and the weather service uses that to keep an eye on any possible flooding, soil moisture, etc…

To measure snow I have a “snowboard”…

It is a piece of plywood and insulates between the snow and ground and gives me a more accurate measurement.. I currently have 5 of the boards place in various locations.. On this particular board there is a piece of foam covered with aluminum cooking foil… it is a “hail” board.. Should there be a hail event during any thunderstorms, the hail will impact the hail board and leave a “crater”… after the threat of the storm has passed, I simply venture outdoors with a ruler and measure the crater to get the size if the hail….

Enough about winter.. I had better close and prepare for the clipper due in next week.. all the while following dreams with a open mind and heart, being different on the path least traveled… but I shall return again one day, Fate be willin’ and the creeks don’t rise…

I have had folks ask me how I am able to be ME, different… and the answer is simple, I follow the advice of Robert Frost; “Never be bullied into silence, never allow yourself to be made a victim, accept no one’s definition of your life, define yourself”… I follow my heart and I am like a girl on fire… 🙂

Chorus.. Everybody want safety (safety, la)
Everybody want comfort (comfort, la)
Everybody want certain (certain, la)
Everybody but me
I’m a girl on fire
Walking through your street
With one guitar
And two dancing feet
Only one desire
That’s left in me
I want the whole damn world
To come dance with me

Come dance with me
I’m a hunter at bay
Come set you free
Over heartache and shame
I wanna see your bodies
Burning like the old, big sun
I wanna know what we’ve
Been learning and learning from

Come dance with me
Over heartache and range
Come set us free
Over panic and strange
I wanna see your bodies
Burning like the old, big sun
I wanna know what we’ve
Been learning and learning from

  1. You are like a girl on fire Dutch, you blaze a trail for sure! It’s interesting to learn of the important work you do for the weather service. I also love the Robert Frost quote! Have a safe and happy week.

    • Thanks for stopping in and glad you enjoyed the visit… not blazing any trails actually.. like everyone else I have the option of which path in life to choose and I chose the path least traveled.. 🙂

“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.”

  2. Crikey, that’s cold!! We moan a lot about the British weather here (11 months of the year it seems to be chilly, grey and raining) and we’re due some snow this week (country is very unprepared for snow, it’s like everything grinds to a halt). Put things into perspective seeing forecasts like that over there. The ‘snowboard’ made me chuckle, and it’s fascinating to see how you measure things. Stay as warm & well as possible! And I love that Robert Frost quote, I’ll have to print that out and put it on my wall, it’s excellent! 🙂
    Caz xx

  3. Listening to ” Blue Eyes” and thinking about how wonderful it being young at heart–a beautiful reminder to make every day count! ❤ It's plain to see you're among the very young at heart. ❤ I think your Clipper is heading our way. Enjoy the winter wonderland. Nothing like the beauty of a fresh fallen snow. Stay safe and keep warm after your outdoor adventures, Larry.

    • Thank you for visiting… we all are young at heart if we let it… well, it is not my Clipper but whoever it belongs to is venturing in your direction…. do stay safe and warm and hope every day in your world is filled with love and happiness… 🙂
